DENVER POST - As far as local-music compilations go, "P.S.1" isn't as varied as the most recent "Local Shakedown Vol. II" but it's also not as cliquey as the countless D.I.Y. samplers bands hand out at gigs. "P.S.1" is a well-produced snapshot of a scene that finds its home weekly at Denver rock clubs and record stores - including the Hi-Dive and Twist & Shout, which Ben Desoto and Tim Garvey, the boys behind the brand-new Public Service Records, call their second and third homes. Standout tracks include DeVotchKa's "Queen of the Surface Streets," "Fusion & Yeah" by the Hot IQs, and Matson Jones' Good Advice, which explains in less than four minutes why it's one of the most exciting bands in the region. But don't overlook The Very Hush Hush's driving "That Look," Bad Weather California's sweet yet self-destructive "Sleep All Day" or Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots' "The Leavening of the Spit-Bread Girls," which has them visiting Motown (and even contemporary hip-hop).
